Take Action!

Contact your legislators and ask for their support!

Find your newly elected legislator and their contact information at: http://geo.commissions.leg.state.mn.us/districts/start.html.

Call your legislator and use the talking points noted below.

  1. Leave a message
  2. Ask them to visit your local youth serving organization with you
  3. Ask them to join you for a cup of coffee
  4. Speak with them about the runaway and homeless youth act on the phone
  5. E-mail your legislator, or send them a hand written note to the address posted in the directory above.
  6. If you have any questions or any new ideas on how to capture the attention and interest of your locally elected officials, please call us – we are happy to talk!

Suggested Talking Points:

Hello Rep./Sen. XXX, my name is ______ , I live in your district at ______ and I appreciate your interest in my concerns for our youth.

Our community does not have the resources that we need to serve homeless youth.

For example, [offer a brief a personal story or example if you know of one ]

As a Minnesotan, I believe that all of our youth should have safe places to stay.

I would like to ask for your support of the Runaway and Homeless Youth act. This act will provide funds to organizations like __(name a local youth-serving organization)___ to support runaway and homeless youth.

Can you support this very important act?

When the legislator answers, tell them that you will provide additional information and ways for them to get involved and support the act.

Two Requests:

  • If you don’t know a detail that your legislator is interested in, just tell them “I don’t know, but I will get back to you with the information,” and then you and/or Kirsten and Sarah can provide the legislator with whatever they need.
  • Please contact Kirsten, Sarah, or Anne (contact info below) and tell them which legislators you contacted and what feedback you received from them. We are committed to closing the loop and following up with each legislator you contact – we simply need to know from you what took place.

Thank you for advocating for Minnesota’s young people!
